Outline on VCloud is a self-hosted knowledge base and wiki: structured documents, collaborative editing, and full-text search for a growing team's internal knowledge.
Before you install#
Outline is lightweight compared to apps like GitLab - a small tier is enough to start, with the main thing to watch being file storage as your team uploads more attachments over time. See Plans.
Installing it#
- From the App Store, find Outline and select Install.
- Choose organization scope for a shared team knowledge base, which is the common case.
- Wait for the deployment to finish - see Deployments.
- Select Open once running. You're signed in automatically with your VCloud account.
What VCloud adds on top of upstream Outline#
- Single sign-on wired up automatically, for every member of your organization.
- A private, secure path to your instance rather than an open port on the internet.
- Managed file storage for uploaded attachments, sized independently from the document database.
Configuration options#
- Authentication Mode - managed (default) or custom. See Understanding install parameters.
- File storage and database storage, sized independently.
- Custom auth mode unlocks a long list of identity providers beyond VCloud's managed SSO - Google, Azure AD, GitHub, GitLab, Discord, Slack, Auth0, SAML, or a generic OIDC provider, each with its own client ID and secret. Only worth reaching for if you specifically need Outline tied to an identity setup VCloud doesn't manage - managed covers the common case.
